On Saturday, August 17, I ran 16 miles. It was the farthest I had ever run. That same day, I severely injured my left foot. I can’t tell you why after the first three miles I decided to keep pushing on for another 13 with an angry foot, but I did. I guess I wanted to complete the long run. That damn long run. And now I’m paying for it. After getting home I iced my knees and said foot. The knees recovered but the foot remained hurt.
I tried to run on Monday, but it was near impossible. I waited a week and tried again, only to be disappointed that after a mile, the pain returned. I tried again the next day and ended up in tears. On Aug 26, I went to an orthopedic and he determined it wasn’t a stress fracture (thank you God) and referred me to a sports podiatrist, which I visited the next day. The podiatrist said I was ridiculously tight and she was surprised I didn’t have shin splints in addition to the nerve damage I had along the top of my foot. She prescribed yoga three times a week, new supportive running shoes, no bare feet at home , no more Chuck Taylors (mind you, I have over 10 pairs – I live in these), and wrote a prescription for cream for my foot that acts like ibuprofen, only localized.
So I tried running again the next day in my new shoes with no luck. After half a mile, I was feeling the pain and came home after walk/run a total of two. I took the next day off and started with some yoga. I did yoga two days in a row and ran three miles this morning with the pain returning at mile two. Better than mile one.
It’s been some journey. I have only six weeks until the marathon and I’ve only been able to do two long runs, one for 14 miles and the other for 16. I have to find a way to at least get an 18 or 20 miler in there before the day. If I can’t do that, it’s unlikely I’ll be able to do or finish the run in October. I’m so saddened by this turn of events. But I’m hopeful that if I do what the docs are telling me to do, I’ll find a way to get in and finish that marathon. I’ve got to.
I did it. The Summer Breeze half marathon in San Leandro happened last week and I finished it in 2:33. I thought at some points along the way that my left leg might stop working. My IT band was so tight by mile 9 that it was causing pain from my hip down to the front of my ankle with every step. Damn, it hurt, but I kept moving, at a snail’s pace, and willed myself to get through those last four miles.

I think not. But I finished. I’m halfway there.
No idea how I will be able to turn around and run another 13.1, but I won’t think about that for now. I just might throw up.
